چکیده

The morphological skeleton and morphological shape decomposition (MSD) are the two popular approaches for morphological shape representation. Each method represents an object as the union of a number of components, where each component is given by a locus of points dilated by a speciied structuring element homothetic. Anecdotal evidence suggests that for many objects, an MSD-based representation can be more eecient than the morphological skeleton. This paper develops a theoretical comparison between the two methods. Combining the theoretical results with several deened representation cost measures, concrete comparisons are made between the eeciency of the two methods. The results indicate that for complex objects | i.e., objects requiring a full range of homothetic sizes in the morphological skeleton representation | the MSD represents objects more eeciently than the morphological skeleton for three of four suggested cost measures.

Flexible search-based approach for morphological shape decomposition

Mathematical morphology is well-suited to capturing geometric information. Hence, morphology-based approaches have been popular for object shape representation. The two primary morphology-based approaches, the morphological skeleton and the morphological shape decomposition (MSD), each represent an object as a collection of disjoint sets. A practical shape representation scheme, though, should ...

Error Free Iterative Morphological Decomposition Algorithm for Shape Representation

Problem statement: A generalized skeleton transform allows a shape to be represented as a collection of modestly overlapped octagonal shape parts. One problem with several generalized Morphological skeleton transforms is that they generate noise after decomposition. The noise rate may not be effective for ordinary images; however this effect will be more when applied on printed or handwritten c...

Binary shape recognition using the morphological skeleton transform

-Binary image representation by its morphological skeleton transform has been proposed in the past as an information preserving representation. In this paper this skeleton representation is adopted as the start point for the development of a binary shape recognition scheme. A skeleton matching algorithm is presented that efficiently characterizes the similarity between two skeletons as a distan...

A Novel Approach to Shape Decomposition and Representation using Soft Morphological Filters

Shape decomposition and reconstruction are vital factors in image processing and analysis applications. A generalized skeleton transform allows a shape to be represented as a collection of modestly overlapped octagonal shape parts. One of the main problems with the existing algorithms is that they generate noise after decomposition. For ordinary images the rate of noise may not be effective but...

Generalized Morphological 3D Shape Decomposition Grayscale Interframe Interpolation Method

One of the main image representations in Mathematical Morphology is the 3D Shape Decomposition Representation, useful for Image Compression and Representation, and Pattern Recognition. The 3D Morphological Shape Decomposition representation can be generalized a number of times, to extend the scope of its algebraic characteristics as much as possible. With these generalizations, the Morphologica...
